According to my owners manual for a 165, the trans/hydraulic case holds 8-Gal. of hydraulic fluid. That is how much I used when I changed mine out and it shows full on the dip stick. The original hydraulic fluid was MF-1129 and is no longer made. The type of fluid to use now is "Permatran III". You have to remove cover from left side of trans case to get to filter screen. I used kerosene to clean out inside of trans case as there was a lot of sludge in the bottom of trans case and then wiped inside with clean shop towels until dry. Then refilled with the Permatran III Fluid.

Your MF165 may not have the small plate on the bottom those were only on the very late MF165's. The older ones you accessed the filter either by removing the access plate with the pto shift lever in it. If you have either of the options of a Independent pto or factory auxiliary hydraulics the liftcover has to be removed to access the hydraulic filter. If I can be of further help email me.

it's inside the trans case. there should be small cover(about3.5 inches diameter)on the bottom of the case in front of the differential. you first have to drain the trans fluid, then remove the cover, and the filter is inside. it's a washable steel strainer, about the size of a soda can.if its not too dirty, you can wash it out with solvent.if it's too dirty or filled with metal, it should be replaced. also, have some empty buckets handy, because the trans/hyd case holds about 15 gallons. hope this helps
