The 135 diesel I'm looking to buy has 500 lb of compression on each cylinder. The guy did a valve job on the head even though it didn't really need it. He had it off so decided to do it. Is 500 lb of compression good for a 1966 with 2200 hours on the engine? Thanks for all of your help fellas!

Curious as to exactly 500 lbs on all cylinders? Did you check it, or did seller just tell you? Your MF dealer can give you the specs. Why did previous owner have head off?

I am also curious about that 500 pounds of compression I have check the compression on a lot of Perkins engines even some with no more than 500 hours on them. The most I ever got was less than 400 lb and most good engines were between 300 and 350 lb.

500 pounds of compression, how did he check that? Also when you grind the valves (and Seats) you lower the compression because you remove metal enlarging the area of the combustion chamber. I know more about the 354 Perkins and I know they don't get to 500. Just trying to learn something. This tractor must no be in northwest Ohio

The guy that has the tractor has a small shop that's been there for 35+ years. He restores mostly M-F and sells them. He's good at what he does and a straight-shooter, no B.S.. The compression numbers were all 500 or close to it. He took the head off just to check the top-end as he had all the shett metal, etc. off anyway. Had the oil pan off as well, cause the gasket was leaking. He said everything looked good underneath as well. I'm going to go deal with him Monday, but I might come home empty-handed. I figure he's going to want alot more cash & my Ford 640 than I'm willing to give up....I already offered him $2500 & my 640, but no deal. We'll see. It's a well restored tractor though- show condition.

None of my business..... ..... ....but.

The 640 is probably gas and I don't know the condition. Expect to pay a premium for the engine difference; Perkie is an excellent engine as far as I'm concerned.

$2500 for his restoration work (discounting the diesel) is not much in my book; especially since you are picking up some years on the difference in the dates of mfgr. (640 in '55-'60 timeframe) and 135 after the 35 and my 35 is a '64 so it should be around a '70ish model..... and the fact that he has peeked at the upper and lowers of the engine, so now you know.

So $3500 for a real good 640 vs $5k for a 135D plus $2k for restoration (which includes a peek at the engine's innards).....looks like another $1k on your bid wouldn't be out of line, or even 2k if it's really in show condition.

My 2c

Dunno exactly, but 400 to 600 are the numbers I have heard on diesels and certainly 500 isn't shabby, especially if they are all about equal.

Besides at 2200 hours, you probably still have the hone marks on the cylinders walls from the original engine construction and might not have even had time to fully seat your rings.
