Hi All,

I am very new to tractors so be patient with me.

I have a MF 35 Deluxe with a 3 cylinder perkins diesel engine.

I am trying to rebuild the hydraulics on this tractor. I bought a hydraulic rebuild kit from the local dealer.

..the rebuild kit comes with the little pistons that goes into the pump heads. (hope I am using the right terms here)
the old pistons came out and one of the pistons has 3 small ring grooves in it but no rings...the other had one ring grove and a ring in it..

My question is

the rebuild kit has one groove but no rings in them. Should there be rings or O rings or something in there???

Send the kit back, it is for an earlier tractor. The later kit fit's the earlier tractors, as long as you fit the complete kit which includes valve blocks, bearings and square pistons. I could not guarantee that the earlier kit would be succesfull on a later tractor, in any case I would think that this must be old stock as I have only ever fitted the later kits, the earlier ones being unavailable now in UK. Why fit parts which were replaced with the later type for a reason... I believe the MF kit no is 1810858M91.

Your old pistons with the three groves in relied on the oil forming a seal in the groves to pump the oil.
The new pistons with one grove in should have small metal piston rings inserted in to them to seal the pistons, this was a later modification to the pump

I went back to the dealer he printed off an exploded view of the pump and it doesn't show any rings for this pump\tractor. I am not sure what to do now??? I already have the pump assembled without any rings. It is back in the tractor.

Will I hurt anything by trying to run it this way?

As far as I am aware you cannot get the original pistons with out any rings, they are replaced with the pistons with rings. Did you replace the chambers as well? I can check for sure next week as I work at an MF dealers in the UK.

No direct replacement for the early 35 pistons without rings are available
They should, as far as I can tell be replaced with later 35 Pistons with a ring on and chambers
MF part number 190799M1 Pistons ,, ,, ,, 892604M1 Rings ,, ,, ,, 184471M1 Chamber
