The number I posted come out of the manual I have for my MH-30 row-crop..There is a passage in the bottom of the rear-end houseing that allows the oil to flow evenlly in the rear-end.The rear-end holds 13-US Gal,10-4/5 imperial Gal,or 49 litres.I don't guess at the fluid levels in these old machines.I collect massey tractors and restore them.To guess at the proper fluid levels would be crasy since it is gettting harder to find parts.

The transmission case holds 13 gallons of oil.As Marlowe said 80/90 gear oil will work just fine.

Be carefull with that 13-gallon figure!

What's a gallon? U.S. or Imperial?

I managed almost to overflow the tranny on my MF35 by taking someone's comment "It holds ten gallons" as accurate. Maybe U.S. gallons. I ended up taking out about half a five-imperial-gallon pail before I could get a reasonable level.

If you are new at this, it's tricky getting a reading on the dipstick. There seem to be a couple of partitions in there and the oil doesn't flow freely among them. As well, the slope of the tractor affects the readings greatly. Take your time.

Then there are the hydraulic accessories. Apparently with a loader mounted now I'll have to add back 1 1/2 imp. gallons of fluid.

One thing I found works to put a lot of oil in quickly from the five gallon pails is to twist a piece of clean sump pump hose onto the spout, get it pointed down into the tranny, and pour. Someone on this list mentioned straining the fluid first, though, so I don't know if it is good advice or not.
