Would like to pick the collective brain if I could fellas.....
I posted a couple weeks ago about a 1966 135 diesel that's been restored to showroom condition. The engine has 2200 hours on it. Everything else is rebuilt where needed. It's a nice tractor. My question is do I go for it or look around for a newer tractor made in the 70's or 80's? I'm after a working tractor that I'd use once a week to finish mow 3 acres, plus clear the 400' lane of snow & whatever else I'd get into. I don't want to buy a tractor and have to do alot of work on it, other than changing fluids and the occasional breakage of a part. I went through painting a Ford 640 and although I've had experience in painting, etc., I don't enjoy it anymore (Spent 4 years restoring a 1966 Ford Fairlane 500 to show quality).
One other question- Is getting hard to find parts for a 1966, 135 diesel? I wouldn't want to buy it for $6700 and have something break down the road that I couldn't replace.
Thanks for all advice fellas!

The MF 135 has all the basic good bits you need ie diff lock, 2 stage clutch, well designed hydraulics. Most parts are still available. I am rebuilding a badly burnt 1970 MF135 and have had no trouble getting original or generic parts as this model had a very long manufacturing run. Later models ie post MF148 had short production runs and parts are actually harder to get. I was advised to avoid the multipower units as they require more maintenance.

Buy it. You wont get anything better.

All parts are easy to get hold of, very reliable (itll start anyday, no questions, i guarantee you that) itll finish mow three acres a week without any worries at all.

You wont be dissapointed with it.

Ben, you say buy it , even..... in reply to ben uk, 02-23-2005 07:59:37
taking into consideration that it's a 1966? I'm no doubt nitpicking about the year of mfg., but I just haven't convinced my self that it's the tractor to buy. Of course if I buy a newer 135, I know for a fact it won't be in as good a condition as the one I'm looking at. It looks as good as the one the fella posted a picture of recently when he was at a tractor show. I figure my 640 is worth $4000 minimum. So at worst I'd have to give $2700 plus the 640.
