I'm looking at a 1979 MF 230 (diesel) and have a couple of questions. The tractor is in very good/excellent mechanical condition (as far as I can tell) with about 2100 hours (meter seems to be running fine and overall condition would seem to confrm this) and was formerly used for haying (the former owner passed away). The tractor runs and shifts well, PTO, hydraulics all seem to be in good shape (I looked at Big Dean's suggestions for a buyer first). Sheet metal and overall appearance is very good/excellent also (no dings or rust on sheet metal). Only real negative is that it needs new rubber- tires are pretty worn, and a couple of new gauges (oil pressure).

I did have two questions. First, there seems to be a little bit of "howling" or "hum" noise from the engine (not actualy the engine per se, but under the hood) at idle, and the right brake works fine, but I hear a clunk if I step on it fast (I was driving on ice/snow if that makes any difference).

The owner is asking $5500. While I might be able to negotiate this down a little, I'm probably looking at $5300-$5400. Does this seem like a fair price (at least here in the northeast)? Anything else I should carefully check out?

Thanks!
