I just picked up a running Massey 44 GR and the engine starts and runs fine. When its idling it seems to have a very high speed. Im used to my Massey Pony where you can hear each time it fires. It idles nice and slow. The 44 idles at what sounds like about 1/3 throttle. I can make the engine slow down to how I like it by just pulling the gov arm back just a little. Then it will idle very nice as long as I hold it. Ill let it go and it will go back to 1/3 throttle. The idle screw is not even touching the stop. except when i pull the gov arm back. I tried lengthening and shortening the linkage from the carb to gov arm but nothing changes. One thing that I notice is that the throttle butterfly shaft in the carb is very worn and has alot of slop. Could this be causing it to not idle down real slow? Would a carb rebuild kit with a throttle shaft possibly solve this? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks very much!!

If your butterfly shaft is worn to much it is hard to get a good setting on the throttle linkage.A new shaft would help a lot.To set the throttle properly before you hook up the linkage from the butterfly arm pull throttle to the full throttle position. Then pull the butterfly linkage and butterfly to wide open position.Adjust clevis on opposite end in or out until pin will fit into hole on the bellcrank arm freely.Hope this helps you.

you probably need to lengthen the shaft between the throttle conrol and the governor control rod. at idle, the spring between the control rod(the one that pulls the governor arm) should be loose with no tension whatsoever. and a carburetor kit would probably help. if there is play in the throttle shaft, engine vacuum can enter between the shaft and the housing, and cause engine idle speed to increase. hope i was able to help. :)
