I have a Massey Ferguson 35 diesel deluxe. It would go dead when pulling hard(seems like it was starved for fuel). I changed the fuel filters, cleaned the bowl and strainer. There is plenty of fuel coming through the filters, but it still goes dead when pulling hard. Is there something else that might be the problem that a novice might try before taking it to a shop?

ive had this exact problem on one of mine ,after messing around doing all the normal/tank flush/filters ect it was caused by the none return valve in the lift pump came loose and partially stoped the pump working ,so under load it got starved of fuel and stoped, you had to blead her up and of she went

This problem can also be cause by the transfer pump on the right side of the engine. They will pump good with the hand lever but with the shorter stroke the camshaft has they will not pump enough fuel to keep up with what the injection pump requires. It is a quite common problem on the perkins engine.

I had a similar problem - MF35, Perkins diesel. Changed filters, did everything I and others could think of, but it would run a bit, then die and not start. Finally decided to pull the shutoff valve off the bottom of the tank and the screen attached to it was totally plugged with muck - don't know if it was just dirt, or maybe algae. I bought this tractor a couple of years ago and never drained and cleaned the tank, so probably got it partly plugged and it took a while to cause problems. The manual recommends periodically draining and cleaning the tank, and now that I've had lots of practice at bleeding the fuel lines, I'm more inclined to do that than I was before I was out of other options! Catches up sooner or later...doesn't it! :) Typical greenhorn I guess!

Hi,
Good advice from Jerry and CT. In addition, there should be a nylon screen fitted to the top of the tap. Make sure that it is fitted and clean. Remove the air filter 'mushroom' and check the underside. The fins often get blocked. Remove the air filter bowl and check the pipe and wire strainer. If it is blocked either replace it or remove the O ring and pour a little petrol into it and with a long taper, set fire to it. Then blow out the burnt rubbish.
When were the tappets or compressions checked last?
Regards
David P

Make sure that your fuel tank vent is not plugged with crud and that the valve on the bottom of the fuel tank, if you have one, isn't partially plugged. Also look for kinked or bent fuel lines.
Make sure the fuel shut off on the fuel control is not partially closed.

You might check the breather hose, that caused me some problems when it was collapsing. C. T.
