Does anyone have an opionion on whether a tractor with a live PTO, but witout a 2-stage clutch is ok/recommedned for rototilling and mowing (Bush Hog)?

First not all MF35 or 135 were equipted with 2 stage clutches. The only negative thing with any tractor with a single stage clutch is you need to install a over-running coupler when you bush hog or when you push in the clutch the tractor will continue be driven forward until the mower stops, not so good around fences or buildings. The coupler is less than a 100 but is a lot easier to work with. Fits right on end of Pto shaft but it makes it harder to hook up some units because of the added length. Allan

A continous pto will work fine for mowing and roto tilling. I doubt if you would want to engage a roto tiller at full power anyway.

If you mean with independent PTO (controlled by a separate lever that you can engage/ disengage anytime), its better. When you get to the end of a row when rototilling, for example, you can disengage PTO on the fly, then re-engage again without stopping the tractor.

Actually I am considering purchasing a MF 135 (1966). It has a live PTO, but it isn't a independent. AS I understand it, this means that there is a single clutch that engages and disengages the transmission and PTO att he same time (if the PTO lever is engaged). I was wondering if this causes any issues when mowing or rototilling that would keep me from purchasing the tractor for these purposes. From what I know of this type of PTO, it would basically continue to turn when I got to the end of a row unless I depressed the clutch. This seems to create situtations where I would be engaging the mower at the same time the tractor begins to move forward. Typically I have used tractors where you get the implement up to speed before you start moving the tractor forward.

The MF 135 has a 2-stage clutch (live pto). If it doesn't seem to have one, the clutch is either in need of replacement or is out of adjustment. I've been lucky to have picked up a 35, 135 and a 175 at basement prices because the owner hadn't kept the clutch adjusted and thought the tractor needed a full clutch replacement or he had transmission problems.

A live PTO means that you have a 2 stage split torque clutch. There are two plates inside. The first half of the pedal operates the transmision clutch, so that you can stop the tractor from moving with the PTO maintaining full power/speed. This is useful on most applications, eg when mowing you may want to stop while the mower keeps running to clears itself. To disengage the PTO you press the clutch fully to the floor. The disadvantages of this system against IPTO are that you cannot engage PTO when driving under engine power, you have to disengage both clutches, and that when the PTO clutch is disengaged so is the hydraulic pump.
