While squirrel hunting this winter I came across a dilapidated Massy Harris machine. It's sunk down in a gulley in a woods and is completely junk. I did find a name plate, however. It says: Massy-Harris; Machine Model 26.RT.956-916; Machine Serial No. 30272; Motor Type No. 5A-200; Motor Serial 54948. What have I found?

You have found a 10' cut model 26 Massey Harris self propelled combine. It and the model 21A (12 & 14' cut)were both a part if the harvest brigade during the war in both 1944 & 1945 when a fleet were used in the west to harvest millions of acres. It was quite a story of determination on the U.S. part to bring the crop in during the war since so many of our young men were busy fighting the war. Both machines appear in the 1948 book I have. The 26A had a 6 cylinder 218 cubic inch engine woth 24 ground speeds from 3/4 MPH to 6 1/4 MPH. How would you like to road one of those these days?I think there was a book written about the Harvest Brigade. It would be interesting to know if the one you found was used in that effort.
