F-40 Starter bendix gear broken

I have a '56 F-40 that has served me very well for the last 7 years. About a month ago it started making a bad noise when cranking (it always has started easy). It then broke the starter bendix gear. Upon finding this and after a trip to the local starter/generator shop, I installed a replacement bendix (everything from the starter motor forward). It worked very well for about a week (started maybe 10 times) - then broke again. I am wondering what is causing the breakage. The ring gear looks good. I read an earlier post that discussed checking clearances. How can this cause breakage and what is the correct setting. I can get another replacement bendix but I don't want it to just fail again if something in the setup is wrong.

Any and all help is appreciated.

while i`m not familiar with your exact starter, many starters have a "stop" ring with a round snap ring pressed into it,right behind the bendix drive, this prevents the drive from going into the flywheel to far.was yours still there?
often times i have seen these break.have you rotated your flywheel clear around?sometimes flywheels get "bad spots"of just a few teeth or so,if this turns out to be the case, you can take a die grinder and smooth the teeth up some and see if that helps. good luck!
