Hi, I usually lurk over on the Ford 9N, 8N board (have a 9N sitting in the shed). I have been lusting over live hydraulics/PTO and looking for a loader for a little while now. Found a 165 Diesel w/ QT loader at a dealership reasonably close. Just wondering if his $6900 is close or should I be looking to negotiate a little harder.

Thanks,

Kirk

BTW, location is south-central PA.

There was a good 165 diesel w/loader,frt pump, about 3500hrs on a neighbors auction last spring here in central MN. I thought maybe my 6500 dollars would buy it. Bidding started above 6500 and stopped at $11000. Tractor sold to someone in North Dakota. Sounds like your deal isn't too bad.

I bought a 165 diesel with a Bush Hog brand loader a couple of years ago. The loader was only a couple of years old and hadn't been worked hard. The tractor was in good shape with good tires. Around here just the tractor in that good of shape was in the $6 -7k range and with the loader I paid more. If everything else is ok, that price sounds reasonable. Check on Big Dean's site for some of the things to look for when checking out the tractor and as has already been mentioned, make sure the multipower is working properly.

first, how good is the tractor?if these little guys were used as a loader tractor a long time with very much heavy lifting, was awful hard on the power steering pump and steering linkage.ideally it should be warmed up,with a good load in the bucket and driven around to check it out to see if it steers ok.assuming it has multi-power,make sure it is working properly,it will free-wheel when in low,and be an engine brake when in high.make sure 3-point is not sluggish or jerky and will lift a reasonable load(have a couple guys stand on the arms& raise them, that will give you a good idea).is the loader an original massey quick-tach? as the framework that stays on the tractor has some weak points, the arms where they hook to the axle housings, and the bar that goes under the middle of the tractor and bolts to the bottom of the bell housing. these WILL break right at the bolt holes.these bolts MUST be kept tight and checked periodically, not a bad idea to change bolts once in a while as i have seen these with the heads popped off the bolts too.lastly check U-clamps that hold quick-tach masts to main frame, clamps will sometimes break,as will area around bolt hole. IF all this is good, you will have a good little tractor for many years!hope this helps.(work on the guy just a little harder)

If it's a really nice loader, runs off a front mounted pump, and the tractor is in good shape I'd say it's worth that.

Without the front mounted pump, the loader will be really slow.

Around here (central Illinois) I'd say a 165 would run about $4,000- $5,000 depending on the condition.. The loader would obviously add value, but it depends on how good it is.

I'm always leery of tractors that have had loaders on them for a long time, as they might have ben abused.

I feel the same way about a loader, but the flip side is it is almost always less costly to purchase the combination together than to buy a tractor and try to find a used loader (or worse new) to mount up to it.

I think a lot depends on how the equipment was cared for. Flip side is that sometimes the loader tractor is the least used piece of equipment on the farm. Depends on what else is available. My application is for our 15 acre hobby/horse farmette so it will not see constant use here.
