In your opinion , would a 255 or 275 make good loader tractors. If so , which model would be better ? My son needs a loader tractor and has an opportunity to purchase one of these tractors with loaders.

I have both a 255 and a 275. The 255 has a loader on it. The 255 has a 236ci. Perkins and the 275 has a 248 ci. Perkins. Both are good tractors with the 275 being far more powerful.

I have had fairly good luck with the 255 with the loader on it, but you should be aware of a few weaknesses. First, the factory front wheels are not strong enough and will crack under constant loading. Second, the power steering pumps don"t last very long and are expensive to replace. And third, the pivot bushing in the front axle must be kept well greased or it will wear out. I had to replace mine and the cast housing was cracked. I shimmed it and put the new pivot bushing in and it is still going strong after 5 years.

Just a note, the first few years the 255 engine could also be a "203". We have a 1975? model, don"t let the smaller cubic inches bother you, it dynoed 52 HP at the pto and will flat put out, always has.

T.C. - Thankyou for your input. It now looks as if the boys are favouring a 5600 Ford with FWA. Still hard to beat that Perkins though. Eventually , we will probably be handling round bales, so the FWA axle should stand-up better.

Go for the MF-275. I have a later model (1983) MF-690 which uses the same Perkins as the MF-275. Good power, very good use of fuel, and good starter.

Either one would make a good loader tractor. We have a 285 and it's very dependable, almost 6,000 hrs w/out an overhaul. We have a loader on our 165 and it works great. That would be closer in HP to the 255. What else does he do? You may be surprised at how handy these tractors are for other chores around the farm. Our 285 does all of our cutting and baleing, and our 165 does some raking and we pull wagons around with it. I would suggest the 275 just for a little more power, but either one would be great for a loader.

Thanks Donovan - We've always been Ford here, but I've always had a "love affair" with those Perkins engines. Both these tractors appear to have been well looked after and with your comments , I'm weakening. Do you find that the Masseys have good hydraulic reserve for the loader work as well ? Thanks , Jim

Our 165 has a pump run off the crankshaft as it doesn't have factory auxillary hydraulics. I have it plumbed so now the loader can be disconnected and plug in a cylinder on the back end. The 285 has plenty of hyd. reserve as it has aux. remotes. The 255 and 275 should have about the same hyd. system. Very fast and strong enough for loader work. A few years back when our 1755 Ollie w/ loader puked we borrowed our neighbors Ford loader tractor, think it was a 5000. Levers were akward under the seat, slower than he!!, and just not very impressive. Then we had the loader taken off of the 1755 and mounted on the 165 and it works great. Had a loader on once before, but it was a peice of junk and the frame kept breaking in the middle. Had it patched countless times. The current loader is an Allis chalmers model, retro fitted to the Massey. Fits really nice.

Thanks Donovan - You're right , the Ford 5000's hydraulics are just that slow. I have the same under-seat hydraulic spool on my Super Dexta and found it awkward at first, but now like it much better than having to reach forward to reach controls mounted on the loader frame.
Glad to hear of the ample hydraulic reserve of the 255 as that's the one that I'm favouring. Thanks again --- Jim

Jim,

255 is a good tractor. My Dad bought one nearly 30 years ago and used it daily. I took it over after he died. Over 6K hours; still strong, uses no oil. Easy on fuel. Good hydraulics. Dave/

Thankyou Dave - I've always had a great deal of respect for those Perkins engines and Massey. It started when I used to work for a neighbour who ran 800 acres (mostly hay) and used only 3 MF35's. One was even a deluxe with POWER STEERING!!! What luxury that power steering was !!

on that 255 have had one for25 years excellent fuel eco. and more than necesary hydraulics. on that 3 point it will pick up anything the front will hold down. However on the low clearance models you will motice that the front axle bearings are heavy duty much heavier than the row crop model.have changed 1 warer punp, a ps hose, and apiec of linkage under the top cover by th inspection plate that I picked up for .65 cents great tractor,

You mentioned low clearance models in you reply. We have apparently a high clearance MF 255. I have to double check on the year. Could you help me with any information on high clearance models such as the MF 255.
