I have a 1965 Massey-Ferguson MF-35 gasoline powered tractor. What is the horsepower rating. I am planning to purchase a 72" rotary deck mower, weighing approx. 730 lbs., and need to determine if the tractor has enough power to handle it.

The 2155 is rated at 45 hp, I'm not sure if that is PTO or gross though

I have a MF-35 (gas) that I run a 6' mower on and it handles it fine. I also have a Bushhog brand 6' mower that I tried on it and it weighs 1000# and too heavy (hanging on chains). But the lighter mower going uphill and pulling the throttle wide open will not make the frontend go off the ground. The tractor has the overbore kit in it and probably more than 35 hp. It feels like it would climb straight up if I had the intestinal fortitude to ride it. I wouldn't go any heavier than the mower you described and you should be okay. Hang it on stay chains and it won't cut so many ruts when the ground is soft and you'll get better gas mileage. Fred

Dennis, I am relatively new to MF tractors, but the MF 35 is supposedly rated at a nominal 35 HP. I have read several figures, all between 32 and 37---depending on where it was rated at, the clutch or the PTO. I have a 135 which is the same tractor and I use a 72" cutter with it and have no problem. My neighbor has a 35 diesel, he uses a 72" cutter on his. In addition to that, all I can say is that Ive somewhat successfully used a 6 ft. cutter on a 9N ford, which is only 23 HP and lighter-----steering it was fun, but it pulled it!
