Can anyone help.

I find it hard to stop (and have to use brake)or sift gear, my MF tractor after replacing the clutch bearing even after I have adjust the clutch paddle to its max leverage. However after the tractor has run for sometime, about 20 minutes, it become easier to stop and sift gears.

What could be the problem?

Thanks alot.

Hello, Culla -

Something is keeping the clutch from releasing.

If you've got 1/2" or so of free play at the pedal, then it's something inside.

Did this come on gradually, has it been there since some repair work, or did it just happen?

Let me know, then I might make an educated guess.

Jack

It was like that after the repair work. We have a hard time joining the tractor together, probably because the clutch was not place right. We force the tractor together by tightning the screw.

We did not do it right?

Thanks Jack.

Hi Culla -

That reassembly is tricky, and is not covered well in any of my MF or I&T manuals. It should slip together until you have less than 1/8" gap between the transmission and engine castings before you bolt her up. It's tricky to get the splines on both clutches lined up.

On a recent job on one of ours, we wound up with a deformed PTO clutch disk - the center pushed ahead and rubbing on the main clutch, causing it to keep turning with the pedal down.

It also caused some damage to the main input shaft casting - pushed the PTO shaft back, driving the 4" snap ring out the back end, and breaking the retaining boss off the casting. Welding shop spotted some weld on the casting and re-machined the groove for $100, a lot cheaper than a new casting.

My fault entirely - I knew the procedure. Punched one out myself 15 years ago. I was out of town at the time of this reassembly and forgot to brief our new shop man.

You'll have to split it again and check out just what all is adrift inside. Drop me a note when you get her apart, and we can figure out what all you might need to check.

I'll try to get reassembly instructions written up to help put her back together.
