It seems I have to post the same message twice before it makes it out here for some reason.

I have a MF 285 that has a new radiator that wants to blow water out the overflow tube. I replaced the factory radiator cap with an aftermarket one I think is 16PSI. It still wants to blow water out. Of course it wants to run hot once the water gets down so I have to monitor closely. Seems to want to do it more when working hard than not. Runs cool until the water gets down. Thanks for any assistance.

Replace your engine head gasket and install proper fastening bolts and nuts. Do it sooner
thant later, unless you are retiring the rig.

Hi there

Just a thought about safety for the people that dont know, never remove a pressurised cap from the radiator when the operating temperature has been reached. the sudden decrease of pressure in the header tank will cause the coolant to rush out instantly and if the person that took the cap off is in the way they can get burnt badly!

To check for bubbles getting through into radiator try this, run a neat fitting rubber hose from the end of the overflow pipe down into the bottom of a sturdy clear plastic bottle half full of water and then have the bottle tied where it can be seen easily, but have it out of harms way.
once the tractor is working and operating temperature is reached you should see the extent of the problem as the gas is forced out.
Cheers Arthur from Tassy

Thanks for the warning Arthur. It is good to remind everyone about that little mistake. I have been thinking about rigging some sort of over flow tank so it may be time to do it. Just need to find a place to mount it.

That problem sounds like the head gasket is leaking compression into the cooling system. This is quite common on the AD4-318 engines. They came with a different head gasket and I think new bolts and nuts (I cannot remember for sure) back in the 1980s for them. Yours may have not changed out when the dealers were doing them. You can tell by looking at the head bolts you can see on the injector side of the engine, if you see bolts and two studs it hasn't been changed-if you see all studs and nuts it has been. As Big Dean says they did have problems with the head gaskets on these engines. Don't run it very long if it is blown it will damage the top of the block and liner flanges.

Thanks for the information. I will definitely check those bolts. I hate to tear into it if that is not the problem. I suspect this may not have been done on this tractor as it was imported in from France with a group purchase of tractors and then sold after being refurb'd. I have a hard time getting parts for it as the dealers don't recognize the s/n as being a MF s/n.

Thanks for the info Big Dean. Should I be able to look in the radiator and see bubbles when it is running?

It may only leak when the engine is under a load and after it reaches operating temperature that is usually the way with them. That is why it is so hard to find that problem
