I have run across a 44-6 that I could have a chance to buy. The problem is that I know very little about a 44. This one has sat for 4-5 years but was said to run ok,it did tend to occasionaly foul the rearmost plug. It has a saw mounted on it and the whole thing needs a lot of TLC. Tires hold air but are pretty much gone,no 3-point or hydraulics, but I did only get a quick look from a distance. Is this a rarity with the six-cylinder?, any ballpark of the value if it does run? I just bought a JD 40t in Dec and have barely started on that one but I may not be able to resist another project. Thanks for any advice from the MH experts out there.

I had to replace the motor in one of my 44-6(the orginal sat to long with open exhaust) so I know parts are out there. NAPA has a lot of parts for those tractors, some real close to orginal-altho the counter help all run to the back when I walk in because it takes some looking. Good luck.

Few older tractor engines are cheap to work on.The good news is parts are available for the most part for both this tractor model and the engine.I just bought a new camshaft ($225) for the one I am restoring and I found all new engine studs (Harris Guy).
The 44-6 is getting to be kind of hard to find these days.It has a 226 CID Continental engine.A sweet sounding engine when running on all six.The only thing I have as yet to find is the bellcrank for the power lift.
What is the year of this tractor? Row crop or western model? Let us know if you decide against buying it please.

The tractor is a narrow front row crop,-ser. no. 44-6-?r2317, so ithink a "47, its hard to read. Engine ser.no. plate says -Kaiser-frazer?I expected to see Continental. whats that? I looked at it closer today and the engine is free. There aren't any outwardly visible cracks on the engine. I was going to check the strength of the anti-freeze but I couldn't see any, either low or maybe has been drained. The tractor has a single "rockshaft" under the left side of the seat, is this odd or normal? -Thanks

The Kaiser& Frazier cars used the same Continental engine with a few changes like the exhaust manifold and a lack of a need for a govenor.I imagine that engine was removed from a car and used as a replacement for the original engine.I have been a mechanic all my life and those engines were very well designed and built for the time and those engines were also widely used in all sorts of things like tow motors, forklifts etc.
Look on top of the transmission case next to the PTO/pulley lever. The serial number is stamped there and the area can usually be scraped off to where the numbers can be read.I think you will find GR 2317.G for gas.R for row crop. Also look under the belly of the tractor just behind the engine. There should be a casting date in the cast.1947 models were kind of special as that was the hundreth anniversary of Massey Harris and supposedly the engines in that year only were painted black.New serial and engine number plates are avalible to replace those that are unreadable or almost so..
The single "rockshaft" is the power lift. There is a pedal on the opposite side that when tripped causes the transmission to rotate the "rockshaft"Does it have a bellcrank(lever) on the "rockshaft? I have been looking for one for a year now.
The draincock is just opposite of what it looks to be when closed.Dad bought a new 44-6 GR in 1947 and a cousin forgot to drain it one night .The block froze and cracked.Dad had it welded ,but I am wondering maybe the engine was replaced after he sold it in 1953.Are you even remotely located near central Indiana? Unfortunately, I don't have the serial number of his tractor, but I sure would like to find it someday. bob

not real common, but not such a real rarity either.engines aren`t cheap to work on.spent 1300.00 on parts and machine shop work and i put it together!sure ran good though.sounds like a 5-6 hundred dollar tractor to me.

Massey made 6647 of the 44-6 compared to 84,000 or so total 44's, so rarity is relative.
