I bought a 74" 175 diesel a few weeks ago that the previous owner made a few "modifications" to which I am still discovering. One thing he did was to change out the original tach drive alternator and regulator with an alternator with a built-in regulator. He had what he said was the orig. alternator which I got when I picked up the tractor. I have finished re-wiring the tractor to the orig. wiring diags and installing the tach drive alternator. When I started it up things appeared to be fine till I noticed the tach was indicating an rpm much higher that my ears told me the engine was actually turning. I shut it down and scratched my head a while. The only things I could come up with is a bad tach, wrong gear in the tach drive unit or the wrong size pulley on the alternator. The easiest thing I could half way check was the pulley diamater. My partner has a 73" 175 gas. I went over and measured the pulley on his tach drive alt. and it is 4 1/2". The dia. of the pulley on my alternator is 2 3/4". If there is someone out there that has what they believe is a factory altenator and pulley on a late 175 diesel, would you please measure the dia. of the pulley and let me know what it is.

Thanks

I'll check that tommorrow for you. We have a 175 diesel that my Dad bought brand new. It is all original (except for the ammeter). I could count the teeth on the tach drive gears too if you like.

Alternator pulley is 4.5". Crank pulley is about 6.75". That is on a 1965 (I think) 175 diesel.
