I just purchased a 1973 MF 165, and it came with a hydraulic problem. The Tractor runs great but will not lift the 3 point system with or without attachments. Someone told me to check the filter on the hydraulic pump first, but I am unsure of where it is located. I would prefer to start with the easiest solution and work from there. Any suggestions on what to do? Anyone with an exploded veiw of the area? Anyone else experienced this problem? Thanks and ALL suggestions are appreciated.

Hi Walter It is possible that it is your filter but usually they will not keep the lift from raising they will usually make them raise slow or jerky as the come up. First does your MF165 have a diverter valve just in front of the seat on the right side of the liftcover? If it does is it set right for the three point lift to raise? Second how do you have the quadrant controls set? To use to position control lever the draft control lever should be in the fully raised position. If you are using the draft control lever the position control lever should be in the transport position. Other thing that can cause it not to lift is the O-rings on the standpipe the cylinder busted or the O-ring between the cylinder & the liftcover. A bad relief valve or the liftcover control linkage inside the rear center housing are out of adjustment or bent or broke. If I can be of further help Email me.

To get to the filter take the cover off that has the PTO handle sticking out of it. Youll need to drain some oil and I put one wheel in a ditch to mkae the oil drain away, if you dont drain any then there will be a lot of oil all over the place!

the filter is slightly further forwards on the inside. You unscrew the top and lift the whole assembly up from the bottom cup. Leave that cup and all of the gnge it has blocked will go straight in the pump intake - not very good.

Theres a gear that slides back and forth to engage the PTO. Theres a bit on the end of the PTO lever on the inside that sits on a groove in front of the gear, getting that back in can be fiddly, but should go in if you dont move the gear. (this whole paragraph is putting the lever back in by the way!)

I personally think that its more likely that the quadrant levers have come off the pump. If the filters blocked then it would probably still try and lift the arms, they would at least jump around a bit, unless its really badly blocked.

Anyway, your probably right, check the simple stuff first!

Ben
