I am visiting from the other red forum. (Father, forgive me for I have sinned). However, I was looking at a 44 Special row crop. It has a factory wide front, remote control with a Greason valve and breakaway couplers (new), live PTO that needs to be adjusted, Char Lyn power steering and a good 10 yearold paint. The owner swapped a good 260 motor to replace the 277 that had a ventilated block. I saw the old motor. It is my understanding that just above where the gearshift goes into the transmission there is a cover that has the gear positions marked. This one is missing. The owners son does not know the gear locations. The temperature heer is -30F. To start the unit we must pull it. Question one: Would some one please draw the shifting diagram so as we would not break anything please? What would be a fair price rangefor such an animal? How would they compare in 1954-56 with say a Super M? In my area the only Masseys of any number were the smaller tractors. Many farmers used TO 20s,30s,35s and MF 35s and many had the larger IHs. Just the way it sold in those years here.

The shift pattern would be:
5 R 2
4 1 3
The engine swap is a wildcard, since if an overbore were done 3 or 4 decades ago, when everyone was boosting their power, at overhaul,
you may have close to the 277 HP, with the 260. At
fifty plus years, the live clutch may need more than 'adjust'. A broken tapered spring can drop
steel balls, cups, into the housing base. If an
authentic Special, w/cast center 38"wheels, good
engine, it will handle better than any letter
color tractor. WFE may need repairs, as these have
many wear parts, but usually improve. Nice OP
station on a Special, they(MH)figured this out first. Intact, the safest. Any decent Special RC
is worth a Grand, or more. The PS and new valve are a plus.

Thank you Mr. Harris Guy for your prompt, courteous and informative reply. I have spent a lot of time trying to understand why in the fifties in this area when there were almost as many MH dealers as IH, why many farmers purchased the smaller Masseys( I guess for the 3PH, not wanting Fast Hitch, and for manouverability. That could be a given. However only a handful of MH 30s, 33s, and 44s were ever sold. No 55s or 555s; and only a couple of 333s and one 444. Many H, M, W-?s and their Supers as well as the 100 series (in the 300 and up) were sold. Must have had a love-hate affair with those tractors. I have also seen this in other areas, and I would welcome other people's comments and theories. Once again, thank you for the information. QR

If you figure that one out let us know.It is and was obvious to anyone who worked or works on tractors that the Massey Harris tractors were superior (in many ways) in design compared to anything of that era.All one has to do is look at the design and then rebuild a waterpump on an M or a Deere 2 cylinder to get a real feeling for what I am saying.
