Use an electrical meter (DC Voltage) and check the reading at the battery while it is running. IF it is charging it should show over 13 volts. If the system is a negative ground someone probably did not reverse the wires on the ammeter.

You could also check the reading at the started to see if it is charging back through the system like it should.

While you are checking turn on the lights and see how the readings change. Should stay over 13 volts if properly charging.

Who cares, if it works? in reply to ric, 01-27-2005 17:00:26
Mine shows discharge as well, but the battery stays charged and on cold mornings after starting it shows a lot of discharge. Hence, I may safely conclude that the gauge is reversed. I may not be an engineer, but I can multiply by -1.

Just a thought, (I am not a mechanic), my 35 is a positive ground. If yours is also, would the gauge run backwards if you wired it as a negative ground? C. T.

If you have an amp meter and it is showing discharge when the engine is running and the battery is still being charged, I would say the wires on the rear are on the wrong way around as the amp meter is wired in series and the current passes through it.
If it is an amp meter do not connect it to ground.

Ric, You might look at your serial number plate, if it says "Manufactured in Covington, England" or something like that, it is positive ground. C. T.
