Compression Numbers for a 35

Hi all, I am hoping someone can help me with a guide to what the values of a compression test on a 1959 35 with a Standard diesel engine should be? The engine is reputed to be recently rebuilt, and the test this weekend showed about 300psi, consistant across all four cylinders (within 10%). My mechanic is not sure if 300 is a good number as he feels that 500 is more common (granted with the newer engines). If anyone can comment, it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your help!

Mike

The Standard 23c advertised 20:1 compression ratio. I guess that would be about 294 PSI at 1.0 ISA. Give or take a few for wear or rebuild.

Thanks for your time to respond! I have not had much luck finding info on this. When all has been said and done, the mechanic has decided that the reading they got was a good/valid number and has moved on to a new idea. On further inspection they found the timing to be way off, and are suspecting the timing chain to have jumped a link ar two. With the timing mark on the fuel pump at firing point, (according to the manual they have at 16 deg BTDC) the piston is already at TDC or just slightly below. The current work will be to check/replace timing chain or tensioner.

Thanks again!

Mike

You don't mean 300 psi, that's extraordinarily high for a machine with the 6-6.5 compression ratio. You must mean kilopascals. In terms of psi 120-130 psi is excellent condition, 80 psi or less is unacceptable.

Hi Jerry,

Are you refering to a gas or diesel engine for your compression numbers? I believe that for a gas engine you are on the ball, but that they would be low for a diesel. Not trying to get any backs up, just curious.

Thanks for your time to respond and help out!

You're are right of course. I quoted numbers more appropriate to a Continental Z134 engine. I just assumed that's what you were talking about since diesel compression numbers are usually hard to get. Sorry about that.
