Massey 44 - cold weather operating problems

I've got a 44 which is primarily used for pushing snow. The tractor runs fine in the summer months but the winter (-25C) is another story. The tractor starts very good, however after the tractor has warmed up a bit it begins to run poorly (spattering and smoking - gas). I've noticed that immediately above the carb it tends to frost up - which seems to indicate an air leak. Also while it is spattering the governor is moving erratically. I've replaced the carb (a used one) and put new gaskets on the carb with no effect on the tractor performance. I have also replaced the gas tank (it had a hole in it); new spark plugs; and new plug wires installed.
Any suggestions??

this is common with them frost builds up on the intake [inside and outside] and chokes them off try putting a little blanket around the intake just above carb.or run a hose from the air cleaner to the top of the manafold to pick up warm air becarfull because it gets hot

Yes this is a cronic problem with the 44 and a few other long neck beauties.
Your going to think I'm crazy but I actually fashioned a shroud out of tin wraped it around the bottom of the intake and put a battery powered hairdryer inside. It takes 3 "D" sized batterys per snow fall. But does the job no frosty carb. It does look a little wacky..
You have to be resourceful up here in the north.
