Anybody know of any tricks of the trade for changing out an alternator belt on a MF203 1966?
Do you really have to seperate the front of the tractor? Any advice would be appreciated!

HELLO! You're only the third person to post as having a 203. Got one myself - an earlier model with the 3A.152 (energy cells) Perkins engine. Anyway, another very helpful gent (Big Dean, I believe) passed along this advice when I told how I had to partially separate the front end to change the belt. The hydraulic pump shaft unscrews from the plate bolted to the engine pulley, but it's a left hand thread and requires a special tool (to engage the shaft as the pump does, I assume). He also warned that they tend to be very tight & best use a 1/2" impact wrench. I didn't know this when I changed my belt (and exercised all of my 3 & 4 letter vocabulary); I ended up unbolting the shaft plate from the pulley, loosening the front end bolts, and sneaking the front end about an inch forward to get enough clearance.
Do you have the dual clutch, and have you ever done the 1st stage to 2nd stage clearance adjustment? Tony.

Tony ,this is just to let you know that I have just purchased a M/F 203 diesel and noticed that the belt was one of those adjustable machine belts (three overlaping layers of rubber with special pins that hold it together) didn't know why it was on there until I read this... I want to change all fluids but don't know what type and where to check .Someone told me the transmission fluids the hydraulic supply is this true?Where can I check the levels?

Hi Paul -
The tranny, differential, and 3-pt hydraulics all use the same lube pool. My loader hydraulics are separate, using the front pump and a resivior on the loader frame. My manual suggests any good grade 90W mineral gear oil for tranny/diff/lift. On mine the gear lube dipstick is on the right side diff case below the seat, just below the response control for the 3-pt. By the way, this site offers the manuals for the 203: left sidebar, Marketplace/TractorManuals. The fill plug for the steering box is under the battery; top off with good 90W or higher gear lube. There are a variety of PS systems; mine looks like a small automotive unit with integral resivior, belt driven. If yours is the same, just top off at the hex plug with common PS fluid. Engine oil fill is at the front on the left, and dipstick is close below. Be sure to clean & refill the air cleaner! Mine was a mess when I first got it. Just use cheapest auto engine oil.
