I am looking for a few answers to questions regarding the MH 44 gas 1. Uses so much oil that it fouls clean plugs after 4 hours of light work. I suspect oil control rings as compression is 100 psi +/- 10 psi for all cylinders. Short of engine teardown, any simple fixes?
2. Tractor is very difficult to steer. Wheels move easily from lock to lock when raised off ground and lubricant has been changed in gear box. Any other suggestions?
3. Drained rear end because of water infiltration. Where did the water get in and what level do you fill too?
4. No brakes. Seem to be seized. Any easy fixes?

Concerning the plug fouling,I would suspect the air cleaner is plugged or at least partially plugged.I just cut the spot welds holding the screen wire in place on a 44-6 that I am restoring only to find a lot of debris in it that could not be seen otherwise. If I were you,I would run it without the air cleaner hooked up and see if it still fouls the plugs.Your compression is not all that low.
If that is not the problem then the valve guides could also be a problem besides the oil control rings.I assume you have a 4 cylinder? Anyone know if they use valve seals or not? I asume so since it is an overhead valve engine.Seals could be shot.Serial number?

you also have a bearing in the botton of the front pedistal between the front wheels that most don't grease and they also get woren bad

One simple fix that might help the fouling problem temporarily is using hotter-running plugs along with heavier oil; beyond that??? Water can enter through gearshift lever base if cap is cracked or missing.

The steering problem is probably binding, caused by the box moving while operating the tractor. If
you have some one turn the steering wheel, while you watch the steering box, you may notice it move
under load. The four 3/8" cap bolts can no longer
secure the box, with worn bolt boss thread in the pedestal base. The box may also need new bearings,
adjustment. Two improvements for the moving box:
tap deeper holes, and use new longer Grade 8 bolts
Fabricate some steel flat stock to anchor the box
from the four 3/8" holes, to the 1/2" radiator U-
frame bolt bosses. If these concepts are wrong, you have issues of bushing/tooth wear in the sector & worm gears. Parts from a MH 30 will match
plus are usually in better condition, due too the lighter engine.Avoid parts from tractors that
had a loader on them: tired iron, major wear.
