Got on my MF50 today to move snow with rear mounted blower. Reverse and 1st works fine but shifter won't move over to 2nd or 3rd. Hi/Lo shifter works so I can move around but this needs to be fixed. Anyone have an idea what might be wrong and how to fix? Everything worked fine when I parked it last week.

I think if you do a forum archive search you will find many courses of action. Dad & I have always had this problem with our 35 if we're not paying attention during shifting. we open up the 2" oil fill next to the shifter and move the gears forward & backwards until each set is in the N position. DO NOT FORCE !!!!! I'm sure I'll get abuse for this from some of the guys but it's how Dad taught me & it's probably (Lord willing) how I'll teach my son to do it. You get a feel for it after a while. I've found the main cause to be either "sloppy" shifting or lifting the shifter while shifting. If it's that cold, I'd be in a hurry too. You should not use this tractor until you get everything right again - you may be in for a nasty suprise - one good bump could put you in 2 gears at once & break something. Good luck, ALAN

I'm on board with Alan. I've done it exactly this way with success on my 50. Good luck!

Thanks for the help. We are in the middle of a cold blast, 7 below this morning. Any chance of breaking something if I wait till warmer weather to fix?

If you can shift from first to reverse and not get over in the second and third shift fork second & third shift rail is in the neutal position. There is a lock on the back of the transmision it will only let one shift rail move out of neutal at a time. Either the second and third shift fork is loose on the shift rail or the lock on the back is loose or bent.

Big Dean, Can I fix this through the oil fill hole as Allen suggest. I have done this a couple of times to fix the stuck in between reverse and first problem. Or do I need to pull the shifter like the part man says?

Sounds like the 2-3 shift rail is not in the neutral position. Remove the rubber boot from around the shifter and I think you'll find a lock ring (some of the others will be able to comfirm), pull the lock ring and shift lever and get both of the rails to center (notch in the middle of throw).
