What is the most reasonable method of getting a small package (up to 5 lb) from a US address to one in Canada also what are issues with Canada Customs regarding duties. Manuals are used.
Positive and negative experiences would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Gary

Re: Shipping manuals/parts etc. Often by bus is good; takes a bit longer though. If chosen send as freight. Re: Duties - there is no duty coming into Can. Quote Canada Cutoms Tariff # 99030000 Farm Equipment Parts

Alberta Mike is right UPS and FEDX are very expensive. They have a charge for everything and it takes forever. If your not at home or don't have a place where you can receive it.. that presents a problem. US and Canadian Mail are the best for most things. I usally just tell the sender to put the word "Antique" on everything. Sometime it works. I just had an entire Hydraulic System for a 44 sent up by Post from Texas. It was well over 100lbs and in two boxes. It cost about $80.00 us and $13.00 cdn gst/duty. It was shipped Dec 21st and arrived Jan 4th not bad!

Mike's right in all respects.

USPS does the job without fuss and nasty surprises, unlike Fedex and UPS.

Under no circumstances should the sender list a value on the outside of the package.

For example a vendor recently wrote "old manual" in the space for value on the envelope. It came through to me fine, though it took over three weeks.

Put it in a good envelope and send it good old Government mail (US Postal Service). It's cheap and reliable and when Canada Post gets hold of it up here, chances are they'll drop it into the persons mailbox without any extra charges, unlike UPS who somehow manages to try making their fortune on every shipment with lots of little tricky charges, etc. If it is a personal shipment or you are not a store owner, mark it down as a gift on the customs declearation.
