Hi Steve -

Might simply be adjustments. And you can do both yourself if you're careful with a wrench. Did this start suddenly? or gradually get worse?

Is your PTO controlled by a two-stage clutch, with PTO lever positions "engine" and "ground"? If so, see my reply to Stu's April 7 MF 35 post on Page 3 or 4.

Principles are the same; this 165 model has compound linkage on the clutch rather than the pedal only on the 135, but the free play adjustment is on the same shaft into the transmisson.

If these adjustments don't work, then something is preventing the PTO disk from releasing. Has it been sitting unused for some months? Might be rust.

Attach a heavy load (baler? bush hog?) to the PTO, lever in engine drive position, press the clutch full down, bump the starter. Might jar it loose.

If that does't work an operation will be needed. Tractor split, a couple of days labour, repalcement of whatever's adrift inside.

If you have a handy mechanic and shop facilities, it will be cheaper than the dealer. You'll need a shop manual, and a few tools you can make for less than $75.

AND some reassembly tips from the board here, to slip it together without destroying the clutch assembly!

If you've got an independent PTO, I'm lost!

Good luck.

Jack,
It happened within the past 3 months.
I believe I have an independent PTO as there are no engravings for engine/ground speed near the lever. I want to run a post hole digger, I don't think so.

If you have an independent PTO you have probably broken the PTO brake disk or the shoe. To get at this you must split the tractor behind the trans, but it can be seen by removing the trans top cover. The brake disk is a steel ring about 8 inches in diameter and 1/8 in. thick with a bronze facing on it . It rides on the main PTO clutch drum, and is stopped by a little steel shoe on the end of a small hydraulic cylinder. If you have to take it apart you should disassemble and check the clutches themselves and replace the seals in the drum. You can break the disk very easily by stopping a heavy PTO load too quickly. Overrunning clutches on all PTO implements are a very good Idea.

I have the opposite problem. I have an independent PTO that will not engage. I was bush-hogging and the pto just quit. Did not hit anything. Any ideas anyone?
