OK guys. I have the left side tore apart and I can find nothing wrong with the actuator balls or the acuators themselves. The inner and outer discs look OK to me, except I don't know what the thickness should be on them. They measure .505" of an inch. Could they just be wore too thin, causing the balls to travel too far out of their grooves and lock up?
This thing was grabbing like a banshee! I will be replacing the springs, and the balls, and the discs too...since I am already this deep into it...oh and new seals of course, but I sure would like to tell what the problem was.

Early IH's with dry brakes were no different. Have a Leyland tractor coming in soon. Actuators were replaced in July 02. The tractor has done minimal work with a careful owner and they have become lethal again. Will strip and clean all parts. Can't do much else. Have you found out the cost of new actuators?

O.K. here's the latest. After cleaning and closer inspection, I have determined that the actuators are in good shape and the balls have no flat spots or damage, so they will be reused. The massey dealer I talked to on the phone says my discs are wore too thin, based on my description of the remaining depth of the grooves on the pads, and they have some noticable oil contamination...oh and glazing too. So new pads and axle seals, both differential and inner planetary....about 200.00 both axles total. This was a rough estimate from a local dealer. I didn't price new actuators, although i have yet to get into the right axle, may be a different story there, heh? John

Dust from the brakes often causes the brake to grab and bang on, did you have a lot in that side?

It was pretty dirty, and I haven't cleaned anything up yet. Now that I think of it, the dirt was more of a oily pasty texture, but I thought any grease contamination would make the brake fail...not grab? It wasn't a great amount of dirt in my opinion, but then I am totally new at tractor repairs, although I do my own brake jobs on my cars.

Any oil or grease on brakes will make them grab, pull, or lock up. MF brakes were known for oil seals going bad (about every 5yr on the ones around here anyway). It has been about 30yr since I have been into a 65 but I have been doing auto and truck brakes for the last 13yr

Grease or oil would make the brake fail.
Dry brake dust will make it grab, I have in the past just removed the boot on the outside and blown out the brake with an air line, wearing a mask, so as to not breath in the dust. The result most times is an improvement in braking without grabing
