One flaw in the pony design was that there was not a whole lot of strength or support between the engine/clutch at the front and the rear end of the tractor. There was often excessive force on the square flange where the rear end bolts to the torque tube (which connects the front and the back of the tractor together). Actually, the weakness shows up where the bolts go through the ears of the square-shaped flange, often the upper ear castings are broken or have been broken and welded. Very often, welded repairs have also broken. I've seen a lot of these castings broken in this spot, some have been repaired and most have rebroken because of the stress at that point. Check it out carefully, that can be a big and expensive repair if you want to repair it properly by disassembly/welding or replacement of a new rear end housing.

I have heard, that was a problem with all the cast front frame tractors. My 101JR was broke in half at one time. They replaced the front end. I replaced the bell housing, cause they did such a nasty job when they welded it up. Ol'timers tell me that the bolts would loosen up, and you would'nt see it till it was too late. So, you need to check them bolts once in a while.
