Well recently i purchased a Massey Harris 44 GS from a friend. They told me what a great tractor it is and i believed them becuse it ran very great. I thought i was getting such a great deal becuase i thought all it needed was sand blasting and painting. Well i got it home and i see the gasket at the back of the motor is leaking. I thought no big problem, i think i can put in a new one without to much trouble. Also when i bout it i saw the hole for the radiator filler cap was empty in the grill and a new hole was made in the hood, they told me it was a new radiator and i just thought to myself, yea i here what a pain getting a rdiator that fits can be. So i was just going to plug the original hole and smooth out the hole in the hood. But later on as i started stripping off some of the sheet metal to see if there are any other surprises i realize the sheet metal is hardly held on by a few screws mainly around the repositioning of the radiatior. The air breather wasnt even on tight, just laying on top of the oil bath and filter element, and the muffler was clamped on so far down on the manifold becuase the pipe is so rotted. Did i get the raw end of the deal or what? Is there a shop manual that will show me just about everything i need to know to restore this thing? Any help or detailed pictures will help? Is there a big difference in the row crop and standard besides the way the front wheels are set up? Becuase i know i can get a manual for a 44 RC but not a 44 GS.

I don't know what gasket your talking about at the back of the motor is but thats something to expect with a 50 plus year old tractor. I think what your looking at with respect to the rad is the filler cap for the hydraulic system was on top of the grill and the rad comes up through the engine cover..... .
The hydraulic system was optional and there was a small push on plate that covered the hole. Its probably been lost over the years. I don't think you have a problem..

Yea, i have the X and it has holes in it for mounting, thats what made me think maybe thats were the radiator was supose to mount. Well, now all i need to do is find out why the sheet metal is mounted so ruff. Is the sheet metal supose to be so flimsy? I notice mine looks like it was welded in a few places.

It sounds like its been beaten up a bit. There should be four 1/4 cap srews holding the grill to the rad support and three more holding the hood to the rad support, the top two grill screws over lap over the hood and screw through both the hood and the grill. Its pretty simple.
But if its been beaten up it may be hard to line up all the threaded holes in the rad support. The rad support basically holds all the sheet metal together. I have a 30 that has a minor hit in the front and its almost impossible to line up. I just drilled out the threads on the ones that did'nt line up and put nuts on the backs. A purest would have a stroke but you can't tell unless you really look close.

I wouldnt exactly say beaten up, just used like a tractor should be, it was used on a orchard before my friend bought it so that probly why the sheet metal is bent and welded alittle here and there becuase of being snagged by branches. Other wise now that im starting to learn more about it i think i still got a decent deal and im loving this tractor even more.
