MF 35 Draft Control stuck?

I have a MF35. The 3 pt hydraulics appear to work relative to the position control lever. However, the draft control level appears to be frozen - it simply will not move. It is stuck about mid-range. If I put the position control into slow range, the lift arms come up slowly. If I put the position control into fast, nothing seems to happen. If I use the position control for transport, it seems to have no problem with my bush hog or box blade.

What are steps that should be taken to loosen the draft control lever?

Hi,
Assuming that you have released the knurled locking nut in the quadrant slot then it would appear that the draft lever seizure is between the quadrant mounting arm and the draft lever tube which runs through it.
To do the job properly you will need to remove the hydraulic cover to gain access to the counter sunk screw which holds the quandrant in place. With draw the quadrant and possibly heat the area around the tube and work oil into it.

Alternatively if you can get even a minute amount of movement use a release spray and patiently work the lever until it becomes free.

Good luck

David P

Hi,

I was interested in your response re the above problem. I have a similar issue except it is the position control lever, which is so stiff as to be unusable. I had the lift cover off about 18 months ago for a different issue, and I applied a lot of oil and worked it a lot, it loosened up a little but within no time it had stiffened up again.

To remove the quadrant is it just a matter of taking off the lift cover, removing the retaining allen screw and sliding it out? I considered doing this at the time but the service manual only described removing the quadrant as part of a wider overhaul of the linkage.

My concern was that if I removed the Quadrant the various bits and pieces of the internal linkage would also need to be dismantled to allow refitting. Was I wrong in this assumption?

Cheers

I tried to read some of the old posts before putting this question up. Some of the old posts talked about removing a side cover (dip stick) and trying to move some levers that are within the transmission housing by hand. Are you taling about removing this side cover or something else?

While I am taking things apart, anything else to check while dirty?

Hi,
No, not the side cover but the top hydraulic cover. Removing the RH side cover will allow you to see the operating levers. These won't be stuck because of the oil splashing around inside. It is the linkage that operates them that is stuck. IF you get to the point of taking the cover off, you have to take the weight with an engine hoist or similar (lift at the seat mounting points) It has to be moved backwards a little before it will clear.
If you are not planning a full overhaul, pretty much all that you can do is remove the filter from the pump and clean it. Make sure you re-wire it. and look for any damage anywhere. It's unlikely that you'll find anything if the system is working OK otherwise. If you remove the quadrant from the cover (vertical countersunk screw retaining it) make a sketch of the position of the rollers in the lingage relative to the position of the control levers. As I recall both levers in up position will make refitment easier.
Cheers

That clarifies it. I do have the rather small and old shop manual that is available on Ebay but it has far less detail that I had hoped on these issues.

I assume that if I remove the side cover and the linkage is not stuck (assuming that it can move independent of the level control shaft) then that confirms the assessment that it is the control shaft coming through the top plate assembly that is the hangup.

Any chance that there might be a web site that has step by step photos of the disassembly or is this something I should photograph and post?

Hello again,
Have you had a look at Big Dean's site? I believe that he has photos of most procedures. DavidP

Took a look at Big Dean"s site, pretty nice resource. I am planning to order his CD.

After messing with the lever for three nights (my wife says I am compulsive but we all know that you are not compulsive unless you work on a small project like that for at least 4 days) - anyhow, got it working. Disassembled the quadrant so that I could get access to it, built a small dam out of duct tape and let it soak submerged in WD40 overnight. Went back the next day and, although I had to nudge it a little, it came loose and seems to be functioning fine.

Thanks for the help!!!
