Have been told that all Massey Harris engines came from the factory painted black before they were installed in the frame. Is there any truth in this?

Bob, What if the same person told you Cummins sends all
their engines out the door, purple? Then Case, Agco,Etc, repaint them, during tractor assembly? Engines need some color, MH left them black in 1947, but except for the H260, which MH built some, or all of, the color could be the sealer
from rust. Perhaps that talker can tell you where those 44-6 studs are sitting in a box.

Thanks Harris Guy in reply to Harris Guy, 01-04-2005 10:49:35
I was hoping you would respond. My 44-6 as you know is a 47 model and I was explaining to him the 47 model engines were painted black for a purpose. He kind of thinks he is an expert on Massey Harris since his dad owned a 1950 something model 30.and he insists my engine should be painted red to be authentic. It was him that said all engines were painted black when the engines were built. My sister has some pictures of Dad's 47 44-6 if she will ever hunt them up . Hopefully, even though the pics are B&W, the black will still show up.

MH 44 Engine Color in reply to msb, 01-04-2005 15:01:29
I would agree with Harris Guy on the engine color for your 44-6. This is confirmed by what I have read from another knowledgeable person on the Massey-Harris lineup - Keith Oltragge, who carefully researched and wrote a book on the history of the Massey Harris tractors. It was that ONE YEAR ONLY immediately after the war that saw the built-for-Massey-Harris Continental engines and the Chrysler engines painted black. After that first year, the engines for the 44 model were painted red. The color of the 44's and the 44 Special's engines did not change until 1956, when the 444 model was introduced. And the 444's engine was neither red nor black, it was bronze!
