From sad experience and much aggravation and pointless expense (and needlessly replacing thermostats, radiators, hoses, water pumps, having the block boiled out, etc):

Why do you think it's running hot? Because the temp gauge says so or other signs?

If you're basing it solely on the temp gauge, make sure it's correct. Went around and around with an IH that was overheating until we pulled the sending unit from the block and dunked it in boiling water. Water boils at 212 degrees, gauge reported 240. whoopsie. The only problem we had was the gauge.

Replaced the sending unit and we stopped thinking it was overheating.

I forget the temperature, but when I bought my MF50 diesel, the thermostat was in backwards. That would be my next thing to check.
