hey guys i was wondering if massey or anyone has a replacement lip seal for the asbestos rope seal on the perkins ad3.152 engine. i know that general motors created a lip seal for the older v8 engines. i was wondering if anyone done the same thing for the perkins, or if i HAVE to go with rope. thanks JON

Hi Jon,
Looks like you are stuck with the rope seal. The housings for the rope seal form an oval shape with the bolt holes following the same. The housing for the lip seal is round and in all probability the necessary holes will not be in the block and cap. My 135 parts book gives an upto and from number for each seal type with no mention cross-over.
The rope seal is quite satisfactory if fitted correctly. Place the centre of the seal in the centre of the housing and holding a hammer by the head gently tap the seal evenly into the housing with the handle. Leave the ends so that they are 1/16" proud and fit. We have had no problems in 30 years of fitting them.

Regards
David P

I did one recently, and it still leaked. Turned out to be the sump gasket leaking around the same area. Would recommend replacing this while everything is apart.

Hi,
Yes fully agree, a leak from the rear cork joint can look like the rear seal leaking. It has caught us out on one occassion.

Cheers
