A freind has a massey 3090 32 speed the gears work but are noisy in reverse. it has a 2 speed splitter on a button which works fine there is a high and low forward and reverse which works but the 4 speed with the high and low in the neutral gate wont shift to high when pulled toards you. It used to. i wasnt sure how this worked exactly i can see a switch on the selector where it goes into the gearbox is this the switch that changes it to high. Then there is a solenoid in front of the selectors is this what activates it and what does it do is it a mecanical coupler or a clutch or a gear any help would be appreciated.

Firstly your noise in reverse is probably due to wear in the gearbox.
The Hi/Lo range works when you pull the gear stick towards you it mechanically pushes the switch screwed in to the selector cover below the gear linkage which sends a signal to the autotronic box, if all is ok fwd/speed oil pressure etc, then a voltage is sent to the solenoid, located on the pump cover, behind the selector cover, its the bottom one in the row and it changes range.
I would start by checking the switch, as it is probably your problem. The gear leaver must be pulled over to change the range, as there is a mechanical gate and stop inside which locks the range change after it has been moved either way.
