In the initial stages of cleaning up this 1958 UK massey 65. It has a serious oil leak dripping from the front of the engine. What would likely be the cause? I hope to power wash it in the next day or two and get a better view. I also notice that pictures I see of 65's have a one piece hood. Mine is a two piece and the front one that covers the air breather is bolted down. Is this correct?...this old tractor has front grill damaged and/or missing pieces, so I am not sure what has been altered. I am available thru email as well if anyone could help with pictures or advice. I have a service manual and one of Big Dean's CD's so I am getting educated as I go on this. I know little about tractors but I am a grease monkey in a local GE plant. John Bick

Sheet metal sounds right. My guess would be the leak is from the front crankshaft seal. You're sure it's motor oil and not from the power steering system?

I am not for sure exactly where the leak originates due to the fact that this old engine is caked with years of dirt. I will know more after the pressure wash and degreasing. Sam, thanks for the invite, how can I contact you? As for the sheet metal, my service manual shows a hinged grill door system, but my tractor has the grills screwed in place, I suspect due to the fact that the center support is missing, as well as the bottom cowl.

John, You may find,as I did with mine, that the oil comes from the crankcase breather which is routed down the front of the engine next to the oil filler where mine blows oil out and makes a terrible mess but results in little loss of oil. The old girl runs fine otherwise so I"ve been reluctant to mess about with her but If any one knows of an easy solution to this I"m open to suggestions. Happy New Year, Ali.

Ali, with a bit of time and patience i have rerouted the breather pipe to the outside on the generator side, if left inside your fanbelts deteriate .John, it could also be leaking out of your crankshaft seal, if the breather chokes up, the crankcase pressurises and forces oil past the seal to vent. Degrease the engine and run and see if the engine is breathing normally, if not, remove the breather tube and unchoke and refit. cheers all!!
