I am repairing and painting a work tractor MF 165 and am looking for a close substitute for the MF silver mist grey. It is my understanding that this color is used for the wheels and grill. Are the panels on the side of the grill also this color? I am assuming that the rest of the tractor besides the red is painted flint grey. My MF dealer only has the silver mist in spray cans. I will probably be painting with a brush as I don't really have the spray painting facilities in the winter time.

I have found hammerite smooth silver a good sub for silver-mist. Early 165s had red wheel centers [up to 1968 in U.K.]with silver rims.don't for-get the grille was striped black +silver

Who makes the hammerite smooth silver and where can it be purchased? My 165 has red centers both front and rear. The rear centers are not the cast adjustable ones. They are a steel dished center and the rims are 16 X 26. I have 18.4 wide tires on it. Does anyone know if this wheel is for a special application? It is listed in the parts manual.

Thanks everybody for your input. I think that I have been talked into ordering some silver mist paint from the MF dealer and spray painting it. If this works out, I will probably also spray the red panels rather than brushing. I actually have the equipment to do this but it involves a lot of precautions and set up in the garage in the winter time rather than doing it outside on a nice day when it is warm out.

Hi,
It's really down to what sort of finish you want to achieve. If its just a new overcoat then fine with a brush. Regarding the Silver Mist, alternatives should be available. Do you have Bepco/Tracpieces in the States. The only problem brushing SM is that the silver particles can collect in the paint and it will look streaky. If you want a good finish try and have it sprayed. The difference will be worth the cost. The grille and side panels and the bottom panel should be SM (on UK tractors anyway) as are the wheels. Interesting that you mention 'Flint Grey'. The UK grey is known as Stonleigh Gray.
Hope this helps

Your dealer should be able to order a gallon for you.
