I bought a 6170 about 6 months ago - The 4wd worked fine initially but recently the indicator light is coming on but tractor stays in 2wd. I have had a look around the tractor but I am not sure where the solenoid valve that engages 4wd is located. I see a hydraulic line entering the front axle housing - Is this for 4wd or diff lock?
Anyone know the layout on these tractors?

Firstly have you checked that one of the split pins on the 4wd shaft has not come out and let the coupler slide back?
The solenoid is situated on the right hand rear pump cover behind the rear wheel; its the 2nd one up in a roe of 6 solenoids. It may be stuck open but I doubt it as the 4wd is engaged all the time when stationery and requires a voltage to open it to go in to 2wd it also needs a signal from the fwd. Speed sensor to supply the voltage to the solenoid,
The best thing to do is to jack up one front wheel with the engine off and see if you can turn it, if it turns you need to check the shaft and couplings if these are turning then I am afraid you may have a problem with the 4wd pack.
If you cant turn it when jacked up, then I would have a look at the solenoid.
If the solenoid is not stuck open then check to see if you have a voltage on the wire as a badly earthed autotronic box may leave a small voltage on the wire 0.5 of a volt will keep a solenoid open and you in 2wd.

Many Thanks Toolbox
Did as you said and fix complete in 10 minutes.
A splined drive shaft for 4wd exits the gearbox and another enters the front differential housing.
a splined connecting shaft links these together. It is coupled using a splined bush. The bush basically engages on both shafts being coupled and a split pin then goes through the diameter of the bush between the two shaft ends. This stops the bush making its way back off either shaft. In my case this split pin was missing and connecting bush had slipped off the driving shaft.
Thanks again.
