New power steering pump on MF 245

I have just replaced the power steering pump on my MF 245, 1978 model. I replaced it with an after market pump suggested by my Massey Dealer. It looked the same except it had a pressure relief valve while the old one did not. I have also replaced the rubber hoses on the 4 tubes as they looked dry rotted.

When refilling the system I did as my manuals suggested and filled the resorvior then turned the wheels to the left and filled again then turned them to the right and filled etc until the system was filled. However on the last fill when I turned the wheels to the right fluid came back out of the fill hole. I turned the wheels back to the left and put more fluid back into the resorvior, I then put in the fill plug and when I turned the wheels back to the right fluid came out of the pressure relief valve.

When I started it up yesterday it was very cold and when I turned the wheels all the way to the right or the left the pump let out a pretty good squeal. Is this due to a new pump and cold weather? The wheels now turn very good when at low RPM's. When I first replaced the pump and started it up it was much warmer and I did not get a squeal.

I know the resorvior has as much fluid as it will take but how do I bleed all of the air out of the system?

Any other reason for the squealing, the sound is coming from the pump.

I have a 1977 MF245 and need to replace the power steering pump. Can you tell me the brand of pump you purchased and where you got it. Thanks!

Read what the "aftermarket" pump paperwork says on bleeding. BTW, where did you get the pump and what brand is it?

I bleed an "original" 245 pump too often. I use a very long oil funnel with a tip that "just" screws in the fill hole. Add hyd fluid until it hits the fill hole, crank engine, turn wheel both limits, recheck fluid level(with filler attached, may need a light), repeat, may take up to "10" reps to bleed air out, there will be some "leakage". Remove filler, tighten fill plug. On a cold day with a cold start you might get a squeal out of a lot of pumps.

The squeal you are hearing is the pressure relief valve in the pump this is very common on them when the pump is in good condition and especially so when the oil is cold
