Help! I have an excellent little 135 with one problem. Every once in awhile the shifter will get jambed when it is moved from reverse to first. So far I have been able to unjamb it by going through the oil fill hole with a long screwdriver. Iam afraid that one of these days it will not unjamb. Does anyone know if this can be fixed without takeing the top of the trans. off? I think the shifter lever is worn or the square pockets on the shifter forks are worn, not sure. Will the shifter lever come out whitout tearing the trans. apart? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Gary

I have run into this exact problem on my M-F TO-35. (My son was operating it and managed to get it stuck in reverse.) Unfortunately, I was not able to free this without removing the top cover. This took the better part of a day. I think the root cause of the problem is wear on the detent pins and springs. The slide rails themselves seem to be pretty much impervious to wear. But, a lot of sludge gets into the cylinders that house the detent pins and springs - which causes them to stick. So, reduce your chance of having this happen to you by shifting as many have suggested - slowly, with down pressure and one gear at a time. And, if it continues, pull the top cover and replace the pins and springs. Good luck.

This is something I am working on for my CD repair disc Maybe it will help. Shift Lever hang up The transmission main shaft lever hanging up is very common on most models of the Massey Ferguson tractors. The shift lever is held down by a spring and when you start to shift it you will unconsciously lift upon the lever. This causes the shift lever to go into the other shift fork on the other shift rail. That rail can not be moved because of the lock on the back of the transmission to prevent it from going into two gears at the same time. Once you have both shift rails in the neutral position you can then move the shift lever. If you will use the palm of your hand when changing gears to push the lever into neutral then get hold of the lever to put it into the gear you want it in. Shifting it that way it usually will not hang on you. Adter a while shifting it that way you will just automaticlly shift like this. Below is the article from my web site that tells how to get the lever unhung. If I can be of further help Email Getting the main shift lever unstuck Pull your filler plug for the transmission look inside you will see a big gear. Find a level spot shut off the tractor. Push the clutch down & put the high low shifter in neutral to relieve any pressure that might be on the gears. With a long screwdriver or a small pry bar. Pry the big gear forward if it is hung in reverse. Pry it back if it is hung in first gear. If you happen to go to far it will go in the other gear. You need to get it in the center. You should be able to feel the detent balls pop in the grooves in the shift rail as you move the gear. These will also hang in second and third gear when it hangs in one of these gear you have to pry the shift fork you can see through the filler hole. Pry it forward when hung in second. Pry it back when hung in third. Through the years I have probably unstuck at least a 1000 of them this way. It is a common problem on the Massey tractors after they get a little wear on them

Dean is right about the shifting. DON'T be pulling up on the lever when shifting. There is a tendency to do this when shifting into the gears in the top portion of the pattern, like reverse or 2nd or especially between the two gears at the top. Keep a down pressure on the shifter knob at all times, shift slowly and you should not have the problem, even with worn parts.

Hi,

Gerald is correct. Try to develop a slow and definate movement of the gear lever. Make a positive move to neutral then to which ever side and into gear rather than trying to do a "diagonal" gear change. A screwdriver is OK but a piece of 3/8 round rod with a slight bend on the end will be far easier.

The balls and springs cannot be changed without releasing the instrument cowl and all of the front and side bolts on the transmission cover. If you slacken the back two you should be able to tilt the steering box backwards to gain access to the springs and balls. While you are doing this you might as well remove the cover assy completely which will be far easier. Look for wear in the selector slots, on the end of the gear lever and particularly in the pivot hole in the gear lever and the pin which goes through it. The springs can be removed easily but cover the transmission and use a magnetic screw driver or similar to lift the balls.
Don't forget you'll probably need a new gasket.
Cover gasket 180 511 M2
Ball/Plunger 180 418 M1
Spring 191 221 M1
Hope this helps.

Best wishes

David P

DON'T SLAP IT FROM GEAR TO GEAR! Its really easy to get the shifter rod and yoke flying so when the shift lever moves over to another track through the gate that the shifter rod and yoke go on into gear. Then the gate is blocked and going in with the screwdriver is the first cure.

It's probable that the detent balls and springs on the shifter rod are bad, I think they may be replaced from outside, but I'm not sure. I do have the I&T shop manual and the MF-135 parts book but they are 479 miles from here and I can't get there for several days. If there are hex head bolts up on the sides of the transmission, they might be holding the detent balls and springs. I just don't remember right now. I've not seen my MF-135 for a couple months.

I think to get the top off the transmission requires removing the cowl and the steering gear.
