Was wondering if MH make different styles of wide front axles for 44 rowcrops. Most of the ones I have seen have a heavy cast front mount and the axle slips up into this with a pin through it.Mine sits on a pin but has no heavy cast piece up over the top.Seem like a pretty weak set up on the one I"ve got. Thanks for any help you can give.

In '48, the first adjustable tubular axle had the pivot pin projecting out 2 1/2 or 3 inches. By '49
MH had a complete new configuration tubular axle,
with a heavy cast thumb covering the pivot pin.
The '49 style was the basic same, through the '55 44 Specials. Even stronger support came with the optional 44" center support(bolster), verses 36" regular. To help strengthen the '48 weakness, MH
offered a brace, which bolted to the U-frame,
below the grill spine.

Thanks for the information Harris Guy.That helped me pin down which year Buyer's guide I have.1948 BG ,I guess. There is a b&w picture of a 44 with a wide front end & mounted 4 row corn planter. Also an anouncement of the "new" 22 model tractor.

Do you suppose this wide front end in question could be a Schwartz and not a Massey Harris?

I believe the Schwartz had angle iron stops on the
tube, a square box-like base. They appeared as a
bare-bones WFE. On close up, they lacked adding
'finish' to the design. Regular ads, in old farm magazines, but did they add value, or better serve
an owner? I don't recall someone who purchased this after market. Back to the '48 MH WFE, I saw one on a '52 44, but knew it had to be brought in on a pick up truck. The add-on brace was not there, but it was
not broken, yet.
