have a 180 diesel that spun a main or rod bearing. I think the engine is the 236? perkins, and im wondering if i should fix it or replace the engine. which leads me to the next question. will any other type of perkins engine fit in? i would really like to have a turbocharged engine to reduce fuel consumption. i am thinkin taht some other MF tractor should have a 4cyl turbo perkins engine that sould bolt in with minor modificatoins. is this thought right? and if so what model am i looking for?

Thanks!

I would look carefully at the rebuild option. Kits for these engines are cheap and readily available. What sort of revs are you using as these motors are not meant to be run at high revs. This could be affecting your fuel consumption.

The a4-236 is pretty economical when in good shape. In the MF 180, it's rated at 65hp. A turbo will bring this engine to 80 hp easilly. If you add a turbo on your tractor, you will have problems keeping the front end on the ground under load and will eventually be breaking something else. All depending on applications your tractor will be used for. Good luck.

Hi,
To get the best out of a turbo'ed engine it has to be in very good condition. Why not carry out a full overhaul to your 4.236 and then look for a turbo kit to suit? With a rebuilt engine you may have all the power you need. Don't have any figures for any fuel saving, don't think it does just gives you approx 10-20% more power. I have a French built MF 575 in my workshop at the moment. It has a 4.236 with a 'bolt-on' turbo kit which consists of a different exhaust elbow, filter, pipework and oil cooler.
Try the engine rebuild first.

Thanks

Can't see any label on this one. OPICO in Lincolnshire in the UK did a lot with them at one time.
