Power Steering problem when Cold

I have a 1969 UK Massey 135 Gas Perkins with the double rams on the front axle. When it is real cold out it is harder to steer and it makes my pump squeel some till it is warm. Is there a different fluid for the winter that is thiner or is letting it warm up good the only fix? When warm it works great but that takes a while. Was thinking of something I could warm up the resorvor with to help. Mark H.

Maybe the viscosity of the fluid is ok. Maybe what you have is dirty, or your filter is dirty and the colder thicker (dirty) oil can't get thru the holes till it warms up a bit.

Where is the filter for the power steering pump? My pump & resvior is to the right front on the engine. Fluid is clean only 1 1/2 years old since changed. Mark H.

Dunno. It might be right in the pump. Pull the fill cap off (the pump) and look down into the pump. (Suck some fluid out if you need to as full is usually even with the bottom of the fill hole.)

If you see zinc coated metal perferated with holes about 3/8" in from the hole, and what may be construded as fiber behind that so be it.

The hyd fittings would have to be disconnected then the cover could be removed backwards toward the driver's position and then the filter would be accessible.

A pain and probably overlooked and probably is your problem.

Mark
