Just recently bought a mf 65 diesel tractor and have a question about the oil bath element. Does this unit come apart to get to the steel filter for cleaning? Can you change this system over to a regular paper element from another year tractor? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated?

These filters work well when they're serviced at reqular intervals. At least twice per year, (more often in dusty conditions) I disassemble the oil sump and then remove the entire housing from the upper grille support. I pour solvent into the upper housing, shake it around and dump it (and the dirt) into a collection receptacle. I reassemble the upper housing to the grille support. I then use a thin-bladed screwdriver to pry the splash pan from the sump. I clean both pieces, (you'll be amazed at the amount of dirt in the sump) replace the splash pan, fill with 30W oil to the mark and attach the sump to the upper housing.

The purist say you should never change it to dry but if you do at least save the oil bath in case you want it restore it. About 10 years ago I mounted a dry air cleaner on my MF35 it's the same as what I have on another tractor so I only need to stock one type of filter. It lays flat so I just made a bracket to mount it and ran the air hose to the air intake on the tractor. If you look some the later model tractors you should be able to find something to work, just make sure it's from a tractor of similar Hp. The big reason that I changed was they treat the waste oil as hazards waste and I didn't want to deal with it. Good luck Allan/CA

I have a MF65 with the same oil bath air cleaner. You have to open the front grill to get to the air cleaner. The right hand side of the grill should swing open on a hinge. The left hand side of the grill lifts up and comes off completely (if yours is original). There is a clamp that you loosen and the oil cup drops out and has the wire mesh in it.
