Starting a Massey 290

Can someone help.

I have a massey 290 and have trouble starting it - particularly when cold.

I have replaced the battery which has helped, but I pre-heat the engine for up to 2 minutes and the engine still requires turnover of up to 1 minute to spark.

I would expect the engine to spark much quicker.

Any advice is very welcome.

Thanks

Colin

Thank for this very useful information. I only just picked this up so I will check out in the next few days.

You mention the 'pop' which may come from the manifold. Does this indicate that the engine has been heated enough, too much, or is irrelevant. There used to be a 'pop' when pre-heating a while back, but I have not heard it for a good long time now.

How much heating do you believe the 290 should need? As a matter of interest, I tried starting without heating - it took as much turning of the engine to start as it does after 2 minutes pre-heat. length of time.

Thanks again

Colin

Hi,
Sounds like you hav a problem with your thermostart (not thermostat).
On the right hand side of the engine you will see the inlet manifold which is connected to the air filter. On the manifold you will see a large nut-type component with a wire and small pipe going to it. This is the thermostart which preheats a small amount of diesel to aid starting in colder conditions. To check if it is working put your fingers around it and select 'heat'. Don't worry it's quite safe. If it is working you will feel it warm slightly. You may also hear a 'pop' come from the manifold. Again it's quite safe. If it does not work remove the unit and check to see if there is any dampness around the coiled element inside. If there is diesel present or any wetness in the manifold, the unit will have failed. You may even see excess white smoke from the exhaust. Connect a 12v bulb or test item between the terminal and earth andturn the key
If the item works you electric supply is OK. Most of the main tractor manufacturers use this item so you may have a dealer or diesel spares shop nearer to you. If you need any further help, please come back.
