Hi, I"m half way through the overhaul of an MF 65 mark 2 diesel with the perkins AD4.203 engine, the original liners were cast iron. The problem I have found is that the cylinder bores are not the standard size. The standard bore size should be 3.687", the bores in my block are 3.787". As you can see there"s a hugh difference. The inside diameter and flange dimensions of the old liners are identical to the standard sizes for the AD4.203.
Did anyone come accross this problem before? If so what liner did they use to replace the old ones? or does anyone know where odd sized liners can be located.
Thanks in advance, any help is grteatly appreciated. Dev...

Hi Dev,
You do have a small problem there. Many years ago we had a similar problemwith an MF35 where the bores had been enlarged. Seem to recall that Mercedes liners had been fitted. Sorry, can't be of more help but it might be a starting point for you.
Good luck
DavidP

Hi Dev -

Sounds like somebody had the block bored out for .050 thick inserts at some time. I've had to do it twice because I burnt through the liner and chewed the block when using electric arc welding to shrink the sleeves.

The inserts were supplied by the machine shop, pressed in to restore the bore to original size.

The replacement inserts are thicker than the perkins sleeves, which are about .040 thick.

And we've had no obvious problems with heat transfer - which could be possible with two interruptions in the heat transfer path from the piston/combuston chamber into the water jacket.

Big Dean? Any comments?

Hi all, Thanks for all your replys, as I suppected this is another job for the machine shop. More euro's I guess. But at least this should be the last thing, unless the pistons rise too high and I have to get them pared down also. (fingers crossed on that one)
Good luck Dev....

I don't have the MF manuals for the MF65, only my MF 690. Are you using real MF brand manuals. In addition to Operator Manual, you need MF Repair Manual, and the MF Parts Manual. I never had any luck with IT brand or other off-brand manuals. Also, call your MF dealer and ask about the measurements.

I was talking to a company that specailises in parts for perkins engines and also tractor parts. I was told there that perkins only made one size bore for the ad4.203 and this was 3.687". Unfortunatly I don't have the MF parts or repair manual. The IT manual that I have seems to support the 3.687" size bore, which matches the size on the liners I got in my Bepco rebuild kit.

I got all 3 MF brand manuals at my local MF/AGCO dealer. The Repair manual gives instructions for re-build in great detail. Assuming you already have the Operator Manual, would recommend you get Repair Manual and the Parts Manual.

Most old timers who rebuild many times have learned that you do not order the rebuild kit until AFTER complete teardown, and mic all parts, research Parts Manual, Repair Manual etc. After inspection of all parts, you will know what sleeves, etc, are required. Hope your vendor will take the kit back. Good luck.
