After getting a new tach and cable from Barco in California in about a week, I was all happy with the transaction. Then came the other bill from Fed-Ex today -- brokerage fees of $25.00 on a $69.00 U.S. purchase.

This is a pain. Seems like an arbitrary money grab. There is supposed to be free trade between the countries, right?

One time I bought a surplus radial arm saw motor from Kentucky for 40 USD. Fed-Ex showed up with the motor and a bill for somewhere around $240, if I remember right. I told the driver to keep it. They dropped the fees after I got a revised bill from the vendor, showing the $40. instead of the retail price of $400.

But I thought they had improved. The Fed-Ex sticker is coming off my mailbox tomorrow.

Mail is the cheapest.

Unless you're getting a set of wheel weights, specify good old US POSTAL SERVICES to whoever is shipping your parts. That's the government mail that we all complain about so much but it is reliable and cheap, cheap, cheap compared to the private delivery boys like UPS, Purolater, Fedex, etc. And no crazy suprizes either that they hold you ransom for. Canada Post pops it into your mailbox and you'll be a much happier camper next time I guarantee it.

Let's not talk too much about Can Post being lower cost, if those tax gouging accountants in Ottawa get wind of this news, they will soon straighten things up...even the beavers are scared up here!!

This is useful information. Thank you.

Now that you mention it, the tractor-seat guy insisted on using U.S. Postal service, and it came through just as you described. Whenever I have been burned it has been by Fed-Ex or UPS.

Moment of realization, much belated: I guess UPS doesn't mean U.S. Postal Service. Well hey, they take "u" out of words all of the time; who's to say they don't drop the "S" from USA?

The U.S. Postal service is abbreviated USPS. It does get confusing UPS, USPS, AHHHHH

Rod.. Central East sells a repro tach that most dealers in Ontario can get for you. They sell Sparex. You must order from a dealer.

If Fed-EX and UPS merged, would they call it Fed-UP?

When you get a package from USA via UPS or FEDEX the Canadian government wants to collect a tax on it, based on the commodity. This tax is called a Duty. By CANADIAN law, a broker must handle the paperwork, determine the duty to then be collected by the government. That causes a brokerage fee. UPS and FEDEX will pay this duty and brokerage fee up front to satisfy the government needs, then they must collect it from you. NOW, when you are dealing with government post offices, they tend to look the other way with duties and taxes. It is a sweetheart deal that most governments share and it is being challenged in court. Heck, they will even transport the stuff and maybe even deliver it in a reasonable amount of time but at a loss. They just jack up your letter rate to compensate for this loss. That is what is called a monopoly. Hope this helps, there is no such thing as free trade!
