I have a Massey 444 that will be needing a rebuild sometime in the future and I understand that the 277 & 260 block are the same. I happened to find & have purchased a 260 sleeve/piston set at a very resonable price. Should and can the 277 engine be rebuilt with that set and what problems would I have? I think that a fresh 260 in a 444 would not be so bad. I have rebuilt a 55 with a new sleeve/piston set a few years ago and it was not a big deal.

The 260 sleeves should work just fine. The parent bore of the block is the same between the 260 and the 277. 3-7/8" bore for the 260 4" for the 277
The crankshaft on the 277 used a flanged center main bearing instead of thrust washers on the front journal. The 260 bearings and thrust washers will work in the 277. I do have some new flanged main bearings for the 277. They havn"t been available for years. E-mail me if your interested.

The OD of the sleeves are different. Depending on the sleeve kit you found, you may have 4 inch ID, which is the same as the 277, so the pistons might work. When you know for sure what parts you need drop me a message. I may be able to help you out. -- Jeff

The 277 will have a flanged center crank bearing.
Difficult to know how your engine was rebuilt, in
the past. By the 60's, everything was increase
HP, so rebore, overbore, sleeve changes, whatever
could be marketed, to sell the product. Your sleeves may be a issue, to prevent using the 260
kit. Before any full teardown, some measurements need to be analyzed. Main bearings appear to be a
conflict. Custom, for one engine is pricey.
