I found a 1979, 2745 I would like to buy, but it has the 24 spd trans. If I wanted to put in a 8-speed transmission can it come from a 2675,2705,2775, or 2805? or must it come out of another 2745? Is there a way to bypass the multipower three range gizmo and just use it as a regular 8 speed? thanks for any info,Doc

Yeah, all the 2000 series tranny's are interchangable. I love the 24spds though. Just gotta make sure the control valve works good and you've got the proper presures. We've got a few here and have never had any major trouble with them. All have over 6000 hours on them. If all else fails and you don't want to risk it just leave it in the interemediat range when going forward. This is direct and requires no psi to drive, just psi to dissengage the high and low packs. Hope this helps a little.

Several years ago Massey offered kits to convert the 24 speeds to 8 speeds. I still have a copy of the parts lists. There were two kits so there are some differences between the V8s and the 6s.

Thanks for the comments. I will look into the kit tommorow at the MF dealer, I have heard about this from another farmer also. I hope they still have it on the shelf somewhere. I found two used 8 speed transmissions. One in Minn. and one in NC. They wanted $2,500 and 1,800. Not a good deal.
I will update my findings tommorow. Thanks again.

Depending on what is wrong with the 24 speed it will cost from $2000 to $4000 to fix it. I doubt if the kits are still available. There isn"t any cheap way out no matter which way you go.

I checked today and the kit is still available but costs about $4400. Part number is 837811M91.
The service bulletin is TR 91-09 published March 1991

Holly Cow. I was just going to ask you if you had the part number for the kit. I talked to the MF dealer in town and the shop foreman new what I was talking about. The parts guy couldn't find it so he had to call it in to the company. I still haven't heard from him yet. The Shop said that if the multispeed is still working it will most likely still hold up. He said run it in Medium and no oil is being pumped to clutch pack. When you start pulling big stuff in low or high is when trouble starts. I'm going to check the price of your part number here. Maybe it'll be $4399. Got to go pick up some more downed corn. Will check back Friday. Thanks.Doc

Intermediate uses belville washers to apply. Low and reverse use the same pack so you will be using oil pressure each time you backup. If the engine labors for more than second or dies when you shift in to high, low, or reverse the piston orings are blown.

$4239 is the price of the kit here.Sitting on shelf in Ill. To much $$. You say that low and reverse gears use same pack. The typical symptom of these tractors around here from what I am hearing is losing reverse. I found one (2745) in washington NC at a MF dealer the other day. I stopped and asked if for sale. they said it was a customers who hadn't paid the bill. The bill was $4500. The sales guy said it had lost reverse and they had to replace some shifting forks. I read the troubleshooting section on the multi trans in my 2000 series Mf I&T shop manual. It looks like if you do not maintain your hydrolic system correctly these problems begin to develop. Especially pressure and clean oil. I will go and get computer printout of the multi speed from the MF in town so I can understand how this thing works. The guy with the 2745 will let me test drive it with a 16ft disc behind it. Any particular way to test this transmission in this tractor? Doc

Reverse and low use the same pack but you do shift a gear in the 24 speed for reverse. If you look at the shift cover on the right side the forward reverse shuttle is the one with the rod running forward. The most common problem is blown orings in the clutch pack pistons, but I have seen cracked or broken input sections, fried clutch discs, and other problems. If you're lucky you will be like the other post it won't cost much to repair-if you do the work yourself.
The thing is to stop using the tractor at the first sign of a problem and get it fixed before more damage occurs. You can check the pressures if you have a set of guages. Massey has a small trouble shooting manual for the 24 speed.I will get the number Monday.

My Brother and I got a MF 2675 this summer with the 24 speed. The low/reverse clutch was slipping. We just fixed that with around 500 dollers in parts plus our labor to tear into the tractor. We also replaced the trans brake. The dealers I talked to told me if the low/reverse was the problem that there were only a couple of Sealing Rings blown out. Thats what it seems to be. Our clutchs all looked good and new.
